Man Utd showing ‘great interest’ in Christopher Nkunku

Manchester United are showing ‘great interest’ in RB Leipzig playmaker Christopher Nkunku ahead of the summer transfer window, Sky Germany reports.

The Frenchman has been in stunning form for the Bundesliga outfit this term, bagging 25 goals and 13 assists from just 35 appearances across all competitions.

It is now reported that his outstanding performances on the big stage have not gone unnoticed. The Red Devils are interested in acquiring his services this summer.

Nkunku has a contract until June 2024 without a release clause. Leipzig will hold out for at least €60 million (£49.7m). Ralf Rangnick is said to have recommended his name.

Our view:

Nkunku is currently one of the best-performing attacking players in world football with a stunning 38 goal contributions this term. Surprisingly, he has yet to make his France debut.

The 24-year-old should be rewarded with his maiden cap later this month, but the main question lies whether he could play next term.

Leipzig chief Oliver Mintzlaff said that the club want to keep him for another campaign, but their resolve could change if the right offer arrives.

Nkunku started his career as a central midfielder at Paris Saint-Germain, but has excelled in a more advanced attacking role with Leipzig.

The Frenchman is also comfortable operating from the flanks or playing as a second striker. He would be a top-class signing for the Red Devils.

However, they are not alone in the player’s pursuit. Premier League counterparts Arsenal and Liverpool are keeping tabs on his performances. Manchester City are also in the mix.

Champions League football could also be essential to landing his signature ahead of their rivals later this year. That appears far from assured for the Red Devils at the moment.

Rangnick played his part in luring Nkunku from Les Parisiens as the sporting director, but the German won’t be managing United beyond his interim stint until May. He will take up a consultancy role.

The search is already underway for the next permanent head coach, as confirmed by John Murtough.

It has been reported that Carlo Ancelotti could be a candidate under Sir Alex Ferguson’s recommendation.
