Manchester United were 2-0 winners at home to Benfica in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
An own goal from Mile Svilar gave us the lead at the end of the first half before Daley Blind settled the result from the penalty spot in the final 15 minutes.
The 18-year-old was unfortunate this evening as Nemanja Matic’s long range strike came off the post to rebound in off the Benfica goalkeeper. Svilar’s own goal was our winner at the Stadium of Light in Lisbon a fortnight ago.
Anthony Martial had seen a penalty saved in the opening 15 minutes of the game in which we were not at our best.
CSKA Moscow’s 2-1 win at FC Basel means that we haven’t officially qualified yet but a point in either of our final two games would be sufficient.
Tonight’s victory over Benfica not only means we maintain our 100% record in the Champions League this season but we also set a new club record.
We are now unbeaten in 38 consecutive home matches in all competitions, winning 27 of those.
The only sour point from tonight’s result was that Jesse Lingard appeared to pick up a back injury in the first half and was substituted for Henrikh Mkhitaryan at the start of the second half.
