Manchester United scouts were in attendance at the Braga Municipal Stadium on Sunday evening, watching the Sporting Braga 1-4 Benfica match in the Portuguese Primeira Liga.
The win for the visitors saw them move two points ahead of rivals FC Porto at the top of the Portuguese league after the Dragons were held 2-2 at Rio Ave on Friday night.
As per a report from Portuguese newspaper Record, United scouts were at the game to take a look at Benfica’s young sensation, Joao Felix.
The 19-year-old has attracted the attention of several major European clubs this season after netting 13 goals in 23 league appearances (18 starts) for the Super Eagles. He also scored a hat-trick in Benfica’s Europa League quarter-final defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt earlier this month.
Felix had a good game in Benfica’s 4-1 win this past Sunday, winning a penalty to help them on their way to victory, without getting on the scoresheet himself, though did pick up his second yellow card of the season.
Record takes claims from Spain that claim we are set to trigger the €120 million (£104m) release clause of the highly-rated teenager this summer and that we have taken the lead from Real Madrid in the race for Joao Felix’s signature.
Whether Manchester United would be prepared to spend more than £100 million on a single player this summer remains to be seen, but one would have to think that Benfica are unlikely to cash in on their latest talent for much less than his buy-out clause.
