Man Utd register interest in Cody Gakpo, player keen on transfer

Manchester United have registered their interest in signing PSV Eindhoven attacker Cody Gakpo, according to ESPN.

The Red Devils are looking for attacking reinforcements before the transfer deadline, and their desperation recently led to a formal offer for Bologna’s Marko Arnautovic.

The club have since ended their interest in the Austrian striker, and according to ESPN, they are now keen on pursuing the services of Gakpo, who is valued at £35 million by PSV.

The Red Devils have turned their focus to the Dutchman after missing out on Benjamin Sesko while also being priced out of a move for Antony. Ajax want a hefty £84m for him.

United have already sounded out their interest to Gakpo’s representatives, and they have received the green light from the player, who is on the radar of other Premier League sides.

Gakpo would be a quality acquisition with his versatility

Gakpo had a sensational 2021/22 campaign at PSV. He bagged an impressive 21 goals and 15 assists from 46 appearances. He played almost exclusively from the left wing.

Despite this, manager Erik ten Hag may have plans to use him in multiple roles. Gakpo is not comfortable on the opposite flank, but he is more than capable of leading the line.

Ten Hag should have good knowledge over his playing style from his time at Ajax. He will have kept a close eye on his progress at PSV and now appears keen on landing him.

Gakpo was stupendous for his club last term with 36 goal contributions, but he will have a significantly stiffer challenge with the move to the Premier League from Dutch football.

We have seen the likes of Hakim Ziyech, Donny van de Beek and Vincent Janssen struggle arriving from the Eredivisie, and the 23-year-old will need time to adapt to the league.

Nonetheless, a deal seems worthwhile with the reasonable price tag. If he can find his feet quickly, he could turn out to be a superb signing. He would have the right platform under Ten Hag.

The Dutch tactician is known for getting the best out of his players. He has yet to fully replicate it at United, but Gakpo could evolve into a key performer as the playing style would suit him.

The young attacker likes to take on opponents with his superb dribbling skills and pace on the counter-attack. He also has a keen eye for creating chances for his teammates in the final third.
