Manchester United have been linked with a number of centre-backs since last summer’s transfer window and nothing has changed as we have moved into the winter transfer window.
Despite only having a caretaker manager in charge currently, we continue to be at the centre of attention in the transfer window again this month.
Victor Lindelof has looked good at centre-back this season and Eric Bailly has recently returned from injury. We have kept clean sheets in our last two games under Ole Gunnar Solksjaer.
However, there’s always room for improvement. Earlier this morning we reported that we are linked with making a move for FC Porto’s highly-rated 20-year-old, Eder Militao.
The next centre-back to be linked to us this month is Kostas Manolas. The 27-year-old is currently in his fifth season with AS Roma and has been linked with a move away from the Serie A side during most transfer windows.
Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport (via the Mirror) are reporting that we were ready to make a bid for the Greek defender this summer and that he has a £32 million buy-out clause in his contract. It does seem odd that the player has this release clause in his contract and yet he still remains at the Stadio Olimpico despite continuously being linked with a move away from the club.
Whoever becomes the next permanent manager of Manchester United will likely want to bring in at least one new centre-back during their first transfer window and Manolas certainly has something to offer. He was a key part of the Roma side that reached the Champions League semi-finals last season, not least, scoring the winner versus Barcelona in the quarter-finals. They are also in the second round again this season.
Manolas is a physical player who is good in the air and would give us three good options at centre-back provided Bailly remains at the club and stays healthy.
