Manchester United have opened talks with the agent of Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong, according to reputed journalist Florian Plettenberg.
The Red Devils currently have Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka as their regular right-back choices but the latter is likely to be replaced by a new signing.
Frimpong has been on the club’s radar for several months and Plettenberg has now revealed that discussions have started with his representative.
The first round of talks were ‘very positive’. United boss Erik ten Hag is an admirer of the Dutchman, who has made 17 goal contributions this season.
Frimpong would be an upgrade on Dalot
Ten Hag likes to work with attacking full-backs. Frimpong would be a solid upgrade on Dalot next term.
The 22-year-old has contributed a stunning tally of eight goals and nine assists for Leverkusen while playing from the right-back and right wing-back positions.
Despite his aggressive playing style, the Dutchman has also fared well defensively. He has won an impressive 6.5 duels and 1.7 tackles per league appearance.
Leverkusen are yet to set a price for the young defender but they don’t have much room for negotiations, considering his contract expires in a couple of years’ time.
He is currently valued at €35 million by Transfermarkt. This appears a fair value for the ex-Manchester City graduate, who may want to prove himself in the Premier League.
Meanwhile, Wan-Bissaka has been solid with his defensive involvements this year but seems the likely candidate to make way for Frimpong. United are in advanced contract talks with Dalot.
