Man Utd not signing a forward in January is bad news for Zirkzee and Hojlund

Manchester United’s winter transfer window was a disaster, leaving their squad more fragile than it was when January began.

Their attack took a further hit as they chose to loan out Antony and Marcus Rashford, leaving the squad painfully short on depth.

They were eyeing a late swoop for Bayern Munich wonderkid Mathys Tel but failed to reach an agreement.

United considered signing Leon Bailey and Christopher Nkunku but never got close to signing either of them.

INEOS decided against a stop-gap signing and will reassess their options come summer.

This decision has breathed new life into Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, who now face a final chance to prove their worth under manager Ruben Amorim.

United shelled out a staggering £108.5 million to sign Hojlund and Zirkzee, but neither has lived up to expectations.

Both players are now on the chopping block, with the summer transfer window poised to see one of them make an exit.

Courtesy of a promising run in his debut campaign, Hojlund finished with respectable statistics.

The expectations were higher for him this term but he has disappointed, scoring twice in 19 Premier League appearances.

Zirkzee hasn’t fared much better, with only three goals in 24 top-flight matches.

If their form doesn’t improve by the summer, United will have no choice but to offload at least one of them and use the proceeds to secure a proven striker.

They could go all-in for Viktor Gyokeres, who has excelled under Amorim at Sporting CP.
