Man Utd must move fast to sign Sandro Tonali ahead of Newcastle

Manchester United must move fast to sign AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali this summer following an approach from Newcastle United.

The 23-year-old is one of the best midfielders in Italy, and the Magpies have recently made a shock bid to sign him from the Rossoneri, as per Sport Italia.

After their failed pursuit of Nicolo Barella, the Magpies have now presented an offer of €60-65 million to sign Tonali during the summer transfer window.

His agent has already travelled to London to negotiate personal terms and in our opinion, United must look to hijack the Magpies’ move for the Italian.

The Red Devils are currently prioritising the transfer of Chelsea star Mason Mount. The Englishman could be signed to bolster the central midfield department.

However, there are suggestions that manager Erik ten Hag is targeting a second midfielder. In our view, Tonali would be a quality acquisition for the number six role.

Casemiro was the regular starter in the position for United last term, but there was a significant drop in the club’s performances when he was suspended.

We believe Tonali would be an ideal deputy and could provide serious competition. He is clearly an upgrade on Fred and Scott McTominay with his better defensive awareness.

Last season, he managed 12 goal contributions from 48 outings. He won 1.9 tackles and 3.5 duels per league game. The 23-year-old registered 1.8 key passes per outing.

Tonali has pre-dominantly played from the holding midfield role at Milan, but also has the ability to operate centrally. He would be a superb piece of signing for United.

The Red Devils are currently working on a limited transfer budget, but they should be pro-active in order to beat the Magpies in the race for the highly-rated Italian star.

United could recoup funds in the coming weeks with Fred, Donny van de Beek and possibly Scott McTominay heading for the exit door as part of the midfield overhaul.
