Man Utd must hand new short-term deal to Jonny Evans after brilliant display vs Luton

Manchester United registered their fourth successive Premier League win on Sunday with a 2-1 victory over Luton Town at Kenilworth Road.

The Red Devils opened the scoring after just 37 seconds through Rasmus Hojlund before the Dane doubled the advantage in the seventh minute.

Luton reduced the deficit through Carlton Morris in the 14th minute. United had plenty of chances to increase their lead, but failed to capitalise.

Despite this, the club managed to pick up three points on the road. Jonny Evans had a big role to play after coming on as a half-time substitute.

The 36-year-old replaced Harry Maguire, who was already on a booking. He produced a brilliant a 49-minute performance with 11 clearances.

The veteran star also won 100% of his aerial duels and made two interceptions. The Northern Irishman lost possession on three occasions, completing 16 out of his 19 passes.

Evans deserves short-term extension at United

There was a lot of questions raised by fans and pundits when Evans was handed a short-term deal.

The club’s inability to land a marquee central defender paved the way for Evans’ homecoming and he has certainly repaid the manager’s faith.

Maguire had a poor first half at Luton. The Englishman almost gifted the equaliser with a short free-kick, straight into Ross Barkley’s path.

Having also been booked, manager Erik ten Hag took caution by replacing him with Evans, who produced a solid defensive showing for United.

In our view, Evans has done more than enough this season for the club to prove that he is deserving of a new contract beyond the ongoing campaign.

At £65,000-a-week, he is among the lowest earners. We believe the club should keep him for another year as he is content with his limited playing time.

Evans would provide the added quality and experience off the bench in case of an injury crisis. It seems a no-brainer to keep him in the United ranks.
