Man Utd make contact with agent of Dan-Axel Zagadou

Manchester United have made contact with the agent of Dan-Axel Zagadou over a potential free transfer in the summer, Fussball Transfers reports.

The Red Devils may not be busy during the ongoing transfer window, but there could be plenty of activity at the end of the campaign.

Interim boss Ralf Rangnick will take up a consultancy role with the club this summer, and he is likely to play a key role in the transfer proceedings.

It is now reported that the Red Devils have approached Zagadou’s representative Moussa Sissoko over a potential Bosman transfer.

The centre-back has entered the final six months of his contract at Dortmund, and the club have yet to finalise terms over a renewal.

The 22-year-old was on Rangnick’s radar when he was Leipzig’s sporting director in 2017, but he ended up joining rivals Dortmund from Paris Saint-Germain.

The German tactician is reportedly the ‘driving force’ over a renewed move for the Frenchman, who has recently overcome a knee injury.

Our view:

Zagadou is highly valued by Dortmund. The Frenchman obviously has a strong aerial presence with his height of 196 cms.

He is also solid with his distribution, and has completed 91 per cent passes this term. On top of this, he is left-footed which is a bonus.

It is becoming a trend among several clubs nowadays to play with a right-footed and left-footed option at the heart of the defence.

United were fancied to follow the same route over the summer where they were linked with Pau Torres and Benoit Badiashile.

However, their plans were reportedly dashed when they got the opportunity to sign long-term target Raphael Varane.

Varane has been in-and-out of the line-up amid injuries, but he should be an instrumental player when he gets a consistent run of games.

The question marks rather lie on Harry Maguire’s future. The club captain has been largely inconsistent with his displays this season.

Zagadou would be a quality recruit for the Red Devils. He has superb ball-playing abilities, but tackling is not one of his main strengths.

While he could improve in the future, the main worry with him is his fitness. He has missed a staggering 77 games since joining Dortmund.

A series of knee and muscular injuries have hampered his early career. It has been quite similar to Eric Bailly, who has suffered several setbacks.

On that basis, it would be a big gamble signing him. United could be better off assessing his fitness for the season before making a contract offer.

Zagadou has made an instant return to the starting line-up after his latest knee injury. Dortmund are doing their best to convince him to stay.
