Manchester United look set to miss out on Anderlecht goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, who is close to joining Brighton & Hove Albion, according to Manchester Evening News.
The Red Devils are currently uncertain over the future of David de Gea. His contract expires at the end of the month, and the Spaniard appears reluctant to accept a pay-cut on his £375,000-a-week wages.
In case he leaves on a free transfer, Inter Milan’s Andre Onana and Porto’s Diogo Costa could be potential candidates to secure the number one role ahead of the 2023/24 season.
Meanwhile, United have considered Verbruggen as a back-up option, but the youngster is expected to turn them down for regular first-team football with Brighton next term.
Verbruggen could be a future star
The 20-year-old had a wonderful breakout season with Anderlecht. He became a regular following the World Cup, and was outstanding with his reflexes between the sticks.
The youngster had a save percentage of 75 and did not concede a single goal from outside the box. He completed 30 passes per game with an impressive nine long balls.
Verbruggen has the ability to operate as a sweeper-keeper, and Football Talent Scout believe he has the potential to reach the heights of Bayern Munich star Manuel Neuer.
It appears United are set to miss out on him. The Dutchman prefers to play regular first-team football at Brighton. We won’t be surprised if he secures a bigger challenge in two or three seasons.
Verbruggen has shown plenty of maturity for a young shot-stopper, but the Red Devils look to be eyeing a goalkeeper with experience if De Gea heads for the exit door.
