Man Utd linked with surprise move for AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan

Manchester United have been linked with a surprise move for AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan with manager Erik ten Hag unconvinced over Andre Onana.

The France international was one of the top targets for the Red Devils last summer, but they decided against an approach due to the €100 million price tag.

United eventually signed Onana from Inter Milan under Ten Hag’s recommendation, but Foot Mercato surprisingly claim that the Dutchman is not convinced.

The French outlet add that the 53-year-old tactician really likes the profile of Maignan, who could be available for €70m at the end of the current campaign.

Maignan will enter the final two years of his contract with the Rossoneri next summer. The Serie A outfit are likely to consider his exit if he turns down a renewal.

Maignan’s link to Man Utd has no substance

The 28-year-old is a strong ball-playing goalkeeper similar to Onana. This season, he has fared better when it comes to long balls and ball recoveries around his own box.

He may consider a new challenge in the summer, but we simply don’t see United pursuing his services after the huge outlay made on Onana earlier this year.

The Cameroonian has made some blunders in goal, but he has generally fared well. Onana has made nearly four saves per game with a success rate of 76 per cent.

He has been an upgrade on David de Gea with his distribution from the back and is currently in the running for the Golden Glove with five clean sheets.

Ten Hag personally wanted to reunite with Onana after their time together at Ajax and he has publicly backed him to come good after his errors this season.

It is highly unlikely that the Dutchman will contemplate selling him anytime soon and the speculation linking Maignan with the club has no substance in our view.

His agents are using United’s name to convince Milan to meet his wage demands. They may also be looking to attract interest from other top European clubs.
