Man Utd Unite: Next Season Line Up with Cunha & Mbeumo?

After what was by all means another disappointing season for the club, Manchester United will look to once again strengthen their squad in hopes of a revival — one that has been long overdue since the departure of the great Sir Alex Ferguson over a decade ago.

However, while fans are already optimistic about how the team might be shaping up for next season, the club’s recent failures will still be fresh in their minds, especially that devastating Europa League final defeat against Tottenham a few weeks back.

But quick and exciting moves in the summer transfer window have got the fans believing again that the Ratcliffe-led administration might yet bring glory back to Old Trafford. While it might still be too early to say, there’s a growing feeling that the potential addition of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo can significantly increase the quality of the team. According to ex-United player, Gary Neville, “Cunha and Mbeumo have Premier League experience, and are the right type“.

In this post, Kate Richardson will be taking a look at the rumoured incoming players to be announced and how Man Utd could line up next season.

The amazing Man Utd line up for the next 2025/26 season

With familiar names like Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Alejandro Garnacho all reportedly set for the exit door this summer, and veterans like Eriksen, Evans, and Lindelof already out, the dressing room already looks different.

And if all goes as planned with recruitment, it could look even more unfamiliar, and the fans will hope it turns out for the best. Now, here’s a breakdown of how Man United could line up in the new season.

Goalkeeper & Defense

It’s no longer news just how much Man Utd’s defensive woes in the just concluded season have raised doubts about the abilities of Andre Onana, and it’s not difficult to see why.

2025 saw United finish with a negative goal difference for the second season in a row, in what was by far their worst season ever, according to the statistics. If the rumours are to be believed, head coach, Ruben Amorim, is set to replace Onana with Argentine and Aston Villa shot-stopper, Emi Martinez.

Much shuffle will not be expected in defense, as last season signings, Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro, Noussair Mazraoui, Ayden Heaven, and Patrick Dorgu ensured the needed number in defense. Mainstays like Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw and Diogo Dalot will also be available to compete for places in the starting XI.

Midfield

Amorim will, no doubt, be sticking to his famous 3-4-2-1 formation, utilizing wingbacks to provide the width in defensive and attacking phases. Amad is expected to be the first choice at right wingback, with Dalot as an able deputy.

Winter signing, Dorgu, will be expected to make improvements to his attacking play, but he’ll most probably remain the go-to left wingback, with Shaw and Amass deputising in the position.

At the centre of the park, last season player of the season, captain Bruno Fernandes rumoured exit to the Saudi Pro League might have had United fans in momentary shock, but the midfielder has come out to announce he’s staying.

Captain Magnifico, as he’s fondly called, will be expected to continue in the deep pivot role, where he’ll be pairing with either Ugarte, Kobbie Mainoo or Casemiro (if he stays). Man Utd have also been linked with the likes of Atalanta’s Ederson, and Middlesbrough’s Hayden Hackney, but nothing concrete at the moment.

Attack

The attacking third is where Manchester United will be expecting the most changes, and unsurprisingly so, considering their evident lack of decisiveness in front of goal. The likes of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have all failed to hit the ground running since their move to Old Trafford, prompting the team to record its all-time lowest goal scored tally in the Premier League with a disappointing 44 goals.

The introduction of last season’s highest xG overperformers in Cunha and Mbeumo will surely help improve this unwanted stat. Matheus Cunha who had 21 goal contributions last season will most likely slot into the left 10 position, while Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo will look to reproduce his 20 league goals tally from the right 10 position if the move is finalised.

Now, with Hojlund’s abysmal spell at Old Trafford rumoured to be at its end, United are being linked with a series of world-class strikers. However, the most likely at the moment seems to be Sporting’s red-hot striker, Viktor Gyokeres.

The Swede almost singlehandedly outscored the entire Man Utd last season with a jaw-dropping 39 league goals. If United end up getting their man, they’ll finally have a proven goalscorer leading the lines, and that might just be what it would take to change their fortune and bring back European football to this side of Manchester.

Conclusion

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Manchester United will be looking to get it right in this summer’s transfer window, something the club has failed woefully at in recent history. The INEOS Group CEO said in an interview with Sky Sport, “I believe what we’re doing is the right thing and has to be done to get United back to where United should be, which is winning silverware and trophies.

Of course, it’s left to be seen how Ruben Amorim’s side will actually lineup when the 2025/2026 season eventually kicks off in August, But one thing is sure, and it’s the fact that we’ll be seeing a different Man Utd when they walk out of the tunnels next season.
