Man Utd leading race to sign £70m Ivory Coast star, have big advantage over Newcastle

Manchester United could enter the transfer market for a new central defender this summer.

The Red Devils have had a relatively good Premier League season, and they are on course to qualify for the Champions League under interim manager Michael Carrick.

This could lead to another huge spending spree, and the onus could be on adding another marquee centre-back to the club’s ranks ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

A BOLA now claim that interest from Man Utd and Newcastle United in Ousmane Diomande has intensified following his strong displays for Sporting CP against Arsenal in the Champions League.

The centre-back’s current deal includes a release clause worth £70 million, but A BOLA claim Sporting CP could allow his sale for around £44 million in the next transfer window.

Man Utd have a big advantage over Newcastle in Diomande race

Diomande produced a strong showing against the Gunners in the Champions League quarter-final ties. The Ivory Coast international started both legs and showed a strong defensive resolve to keep Viktor Gyokeres at bay.

The 22-year-old had almost the perfect double-legged tie, barring one lapse in concentration that contributed to Kai Havertz scoring the only goal of the tie during the first leg at home.

Looking at his Primeira Liga season, Diomande has a passing accuracy of 93 percent. He has made five recoveries and four clearances per game, winning almost 60 percent of his aerial duels.

Newcastle are also in the mix for the centre-back, but United have a big advantage as they are almost assured of Champions League qualification with a 10-point lead over sixth-placed Chelsea in the Premier League with five games to play.

The Magpies, on the other hand, are languishing 14th in the table and could miss out on qualifying for any European competition next term.

Diomande would be a bargain signing at the reported £43m price tag. The big question remains whether he would accept a rotational starting role with United, at least for the short term.

The Ivorian can play as a right or left-sided centre-back. He could be seen as a strong competitor for both positions, but may have to earn his place in the starting line-up next season.
