Manchester United are leading the race for Benfica wonderkid Joao Neves and are prepared to make a great effort to sign him, according to Record.
The Red Devils have been fancied to sign a new defensive midfielder in the upcoming transfer window following the below-par performances of Casemiro.
The Brazilian had a disappointing second season with the club. He was initially on the bench for the FA Cup final before he was ruled out with a minor injury.
O Jogo today (page 9) claim that a number of English clubs are in the hunt for Neves’ signature and United are particularly leading the transfer pursuit.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe considers the teenager as an important element for his new team and the club are prepared to make ‘a great effort’ to land his services.
Neves would be a statement signing for Man Utd
The 19-year-old has become one of the most sought-after young midfielders in world football.
He was brilliant in his first full season with Benfica last term. The teenager had a passing accuracy of 90 per cent and won almost six duels per league appearance.
The Portuguese also won two tackles per game alongside 6.4 recoveries. He was also superb with his ability to get out of tight spaces with his superb dribbling skills.
In our view, he would be a quality signing to partner Kobbie Mainoo at the heart of the midfield. Mainoo could play higher up with Neves occupying the number six role.
He currently has a release clause worth £102 million in his contract as per O Jogo. Judging by previous deals, Benfica could accept a long-term payment plan for his sale.
United captain Bruno Fernandes has already described Neves as an ‘excellent‘ player, and he could have a key role to play in luring him to Old Trafford amid interest from elsewhere.
