Manchester United are monitoring the situation of Leon Goretzka amid Bayern Munich’s interest in signing West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice, Florian Plettenberg reports.
The Red Devils are likely to bolster their midfield in the upcoming transfer window. Chelsea’s Mason Mount is the priority target for manager Erik ten Hag, but United have yet to agree a fee.
The Blues are looking for £70 million plus add-ons for the Englishman, but United seem reluctant to pay more than £50m for him. In case talks break down, Goretzka could be an alternative.
Plettenberg claims that United are keeping tabs on the former Schalke man whose future is uncertain with Bayern’s pursuit of Rice. However, the midfielder definitely wants to continue in Munich.
He is 100 per cent committed to the reigning German champions. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, who is now a member of Bayern’s advisory board, supports the player’s decision to stay put.
Man Utd unlikely to sign Goretzka
Goretzka has been a key player for Bayern from the number eight role. In the recent campaign, he managed 12 goal contributions from 40 appearances in all competitions.
The 28-year-old completed 83 per cent of his passes in Bundesliga while winning 1.6 tackles and 4.3 duels per game. He won an impressive 67 per cent of his aerial challenges.
He would be a good signing for United, but luring him won’t be an easy task. He is currently valued at £56 million by Transfermarkt and could be available for a similar fee.
However, the major stumbling block could be his wage demands. He is already on £300,000-a-week at Bayern and may want a reasonable rise to move to Old Trafford.
With United’s plans to restrict their wage bill, we don’t see the possibility of him making the switch even if he decides to leave Bayern during the summer transfer window.
