Manchester United are likely to make multiple signings during the summer transfer window.
A marquee striker could be one of the priorities for manager Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese tactician could also prefer to strengthen his squad with a playmaker.
Daily Mail now claim that RB Leipzig star Xavi Simons has emerged as a target for the Red Devils, but a deal could hinge on hitting the Champions League jackpot.
Simons’ versatility and age makes him a perfect fit for manager Ruben Amorim’s system, but the attacker won’t come on the cheap.
Leipzig signed him permanently from Paris Saint-Germain for £48 million plus add-ons last winter, and may look for a quick profit.
United also have alternative options such as Matheus Cunha and Antoine Semenyo, who could be available for £60m or more.
The Red Devils can only afford such prices if they win the Europa League to qualify for the Champions League. In that case, they could receive up to £100m in extra income next season.
Simons would be a statement signing for United
The Dutchman has been on United’s radar for some time. The Red Devils tried to sign him from PSG before his first loan spell with Leipzig last season.
They have continued to monitor his progress and could make a renewed approach soon.
Simons had a tough start to the current campaign after an ankle injury in late October, but he has been brilliant since his comeback with regular goal contributions.
The 21-year-old has registered 10 goals and six assists from 29 appearances so far. He could easily manage 30 goal involvements per game when fully fit and firing.
Simons is primarily an attacking midfielder at Leipzig but can also play on the left or right wing. He can also operate as the main centre-forward when required.
His versatility makes him a no-brainer signing for United. Simons likes to press his opponents with a tireless work rate. He fits perfectly into Amorim’s tactical plans.
Leipzig purchased him for £48m upfront last winter. The Bundesliga outfit could hold out for at least £60m to consider his departure in the next transfer window.
Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Liverpool are also keen on the attacker, as per Daily Mail. United have their work cut out to secure his signature ahead of their European rivals.
Winning the Europa League would provide a huge boost in convincing Simons. It would also provide a financial boost to sign him. Otherwise, United may need player sales first.
As things stand, United are not in a strong position to purchase the versatile star.
It remains to be seen whether the Red Devils can make a massive statement by bringing Simons to Old Trafford just like Leny Yoro last summer.
