Man Utd interested in signing Chelsea star N’Golo Kante

Manchester United are looking at the possibility of signing Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante in the upcoming transfer window, The Guardian reports.

The Red Devils are expected to sign a defensive midfielder this summer, and they have already been linked with multiple names including Frenkie de Jong and Ruben Neves.

Kante has also been mentioned as a potential target in recent weeks, and The Guardian now claim that United are keen to find out whether the Frenchman could be sold.

For now, it appears unlikely that the Blues will consider his departure, but they could have a decision to make if United make a suitable offer. Kante’s contract expires next summer.

Our view:

Kante has been a tremendous performer in the Premier League for the past seven years. He is still one of the best defensive midfielders, but has shown signs of regression.

The Frenchman has been hampered by minor injuries in recent years, and over the past 12 months, his performances have been inconsistent for the west London outfit.

Kante won similar number of tackles per game during the 2021/22 and 2020/21 Premier League seasons (2.3 to 2.6), but his average interceptions dipped (1.2 from 2.0).

Meanwhile, he has also become prone to losing possession and key duels in the defensive third which have contributed to the opposition finding the back of the net.

The 31-year-old would still be an upgrade on Scott McTominay and Fred at United, but a deal does not appear worthwhile unless United can prise him away for a knockdown sum.

He is currently valued at £45 million by Transfermarkt. United should avoid paying such a fee. Kante is about to enter the final year of his Blues deal with a concerning fitness record.
