Manchester United are interested in signing one of Barcelona’s emerging midfielders, according to ESPN Deportes.
The Red Devils spent almost £200 million on five high-profile signings over the summer, but they also focused on bolstering the academy.
Sekou Kone was recruited from Guidars FC before the transfer deadline while Samuel Lusale and James Overy have also joined the club.
United are expected to confirm the arrival of Chido Obi-Martin from Arsenal in the near future.
It is now reported by ESPN Deportes that United and Newcastle have expressed an interest in signing Marc Bernal from Barcelona.
The duo are prepared to pay the £16.7 million release clause in his contract, but the youngster is not contemplating a move abroad.
Barcelona will officially confirm Bernal’s renewal this week and therefore ‘he’s staying’ at the club.
Bernal set to continue with Barcelona
The 17-year-old made his breakthrough with Barcelona under manager Hansi Flick this term.
He started from the defensive midfield position during the first three games of the season, but unfortunately picked up a serious knee injury against Rayo Vallecano.
Bernal was impressive with a passing accuracy of 93%. He won 50% of his duels with 2.7 tackles per game. The teenager lost possession on less than six occasions on average.
The Spaniard is obviously a huge talent. United have expressed an interest despite his injury, but Bernal looks set to commit his future to the Catalan giants later this week.
The news is a setback for the Red Devils, but the fans should appreciate that the new hierarchy are trying to bring in emerging talents with immense potential into the squad.
