Man Utd in pole position to sign Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee

Manchester United are in pole position to sign Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee during the 2024 summer transfer window, according to Sport Italia.

The Dutch forward has had a promising season with Bologna with eight goals and four assists from 22 appearances across all competitions.

His progress has caught the eye of United and Florian Plettenberg recently reported that the club have made an inquiry over a possible deal.

Sport Italia now claim that United are in ‘pole position’ to land the 22-year-old in the summer.

Bologna have no plans of sanctioning a sale this winter, but they are prepared to listen to offers of around €50 million in the off-season.

The main hurdle for United could be Bayern, who have the option to buy back the Dutchman from the Serie A outfit for €40m in any window.

United should pursue a more high-profile striker

The Red Devils were linked with Harry Kane last summer, but they ended up pursuing a deal for Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta for a hefty €85m.

The Dane has yet to live up to the price tag, but he has started to find his stride in the Premier League with two goals in his last two appearances.

Hojlund has the hallmarks to become an elite striker with the right guidance. United may want to add more competition for places with another signing.

Zirkzee has been identified as a top target but we are not convinced over him. At the age of 22, he has only registered 32 goals from 105 senior appearances.

He has yet to become a prolific goalscorer. United need to avoid spending €50m on another striker based on his potential rather than current ability.

We would ideally prefer someone like Ivan Toney, who could make an instant impact. Erik ten Hag could rotate him regularly with Hojlund up front.
