Man Utd hopeful David de Gea will accept 50 per cent pay-cut to stay, will be offered a testimonial

Manchester United are hopeful that David de Gea will accept a huge pay-cut to extend his contract beyond the current campaign, according to The Sun.

The Spaniard picked up his 17th clean sheet of the top-flight season against Bournemouth on Saturday. As a result, he has won the Premier League Golden Glove award.

The club are now hopeful of extending his £375,000-a-week deal with a 50 per cent pay-cut and are prepared to include a money-spinning testimonial as a sweetener.

De Gea has yet to accept the proposal on the negotiation table. There are concerns from the player’s camp that he may not be the first-choice goalkeeper next term.

De Gea likely to make contract decision soon

The 32-year-old has had another impressive campaign between the sticks. He has kept 25 clean sheets from his 55 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils.

Despite this, there have been questions raised over his starting position. The ‘magnificent‘ star has made some big blunders. He gifted West Ham United with the winning goal recently.

Apart from his howlers, the Spaniard has looked nervous passing out from the back. He has made some errors but luckily, they have not directly contributed to opposition goals.

As things stand, De Gea’s position in goal is safe. Erik ten Hag has publicly come in support of him and we won’t be surprised if the Spaniard pens a new long-term contract.

With a huge budget required for the purchase of a marquee striker, there is a genuine possibility that De Gea will remain the number one for the 2023/24 campaign at least.

The club currently have Tom Heaton as the deputy and talks are also ongoing to keep Jack Butland with a huge pay rise. The Crystal Palace loanee is also wanted by Rangers.
