Man Utd have their eyes on Atalanta star, he could replace Christian Eriksen

Manchester United are likely to sign another marquee midfielder next summer, with Christian Eriksen ‘expected‘ to head for the exit door.

The Denmark international will enter the final six months of his contract in January, and United have no plans to negotiate an extension.

His departure will free up wages of around £7.8 million per year. The club could bring in a midfielder who is entering the prime of his career.

Calcio Atalanta reported yesterday that United are closely monitoring Atalanta’s Ederson. He would be an ideal fit for the club.

Ederson would be a superb midfield signing

The Brazil international was a top target for the Red Devils last summer, but Atalanta turned down an offer worth £42m towards the end of August.

United ended up signing Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain. The 23-year-old had a slow start, but he is starting to find his feet under manager Ruben Amorim.

Amorim previously worked with Ugarte at Sporting CP for a couple of seasons. The midfielder’s reunion with the 39-year-old could bring the best out of him at United.

Despite this, the manager may want another strong competitor in the ranks. Ederson would be an ideal candidate as he can comfortably play as a defensive or central midfielder.

The 25-year-old has completed 88 percent of his passes this term with five recoveries and five duels won per game. He has chipped in with three goal contributions in Serie A.

He possesses a tireless work rate like Ugarte, and the duo could complement each other. Amorim could play them together when he requires more defensive assurance.

Atalanta will likely demand £50m for Ederson next summer. United have their ‘eyes on him’ and should back the manager with a huge outlay.

The arrival of Ederson could also pave the way for Casemiro’s exit. The Brazilian will enter the last year of his contract next summer, but there is an option for another year.

United could cash in on him if they receive a lucrative bid from a Saudi Pro League club.
