Man Utd have made best contract proposal to Antonio Rudiger

Manchester United have made the best contract proposal to outgoing Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger, reputed journalist Patrick Berger reports.

Rudiger’s current deal with the Blues expires on June 30. It has been formally confirmed by manager Thomas Tuchel that he will leave on a free transfer.

United have reportedly made the best contract proposal to Rudiger with an annual package of €10 million. However, he has turned them down for Real Madrid.

The German has no plans of playing for another Premier League club, and is now close to agreeing a four-year contract with the current La Liga leaders.

Our view:

Rudiger has been a solid performer under Thomas Tuchel. He has excelled over the past 15 months where he has been almost ever-present on the left side of a back three.

Despite his impressive showing, there are questions over his ability to play in a back four. The German has been prone to defensive errors in the traditional system.

Hence, United are better off without him. He is currently going through the best phase of his career, but will have a testing challenge playing in a 4-3-3 set-up at Madrid.

At 29, Rudiger would not be a long-term signing for any club. Incoming boss Erik ten Hag may ideally want a young centre-back with valuable European experience.

Jules Kounde and Pau Torres could be ideal candidates for United to pursue. Both players are back on the club’s radar, having been regularly linked last summer.
