Manchester United are interested in signing Napoli striker Victor Osimhen during this summer’s transfer window, Gazzetta dello Sport (Monday’s edition, page 19) reports.
The Nigerian joined the Serie A outfit from Lille for a club-record £58.5 million fee last season, but struggled to impose himself with just 10 goals across all competitions.
A shoulder injury hampered him. It has been quite similar this term with a cheekbone fracture, but his form has been far better with 15 goals from just 25 appearances.
The 23-year-old has recently hit peak form, scoring back-to-back braces, and it is now reported that he is attracting plenty of Premier League transfer interest.
Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United have been linked, but United are also said to be keeping tabs on his progress ahead of the summer transfer window.
Napoli are not actively looking to part ways with his services, but Gazzetta dello Sport claims their transfer stance could change if they receive a fee of around £84m.
United currently have Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani and Marcus Rashford as centre-forward options, but two of them have been pretty much out of form.
Rashford has looked out of sorts over the past few months while Cavani has barely hit his stride, having been disrupted throughout the campaign with multiple niggles.
This has pretty much left the burden on Ronaldo, who has netted 18 times. His displays have also been concerning since the New Year with just four goals to his name.
Interim boss Ralf Rangnick has made it clear that the club will pursue a young striker this summer. Osimhen could be a potential target for the next transfer window.
Osimhen has excelled with his aerial prowess, winning several duels. He has also impressed with his quick dribbling and the gifted finishing ability in the box.
There is a potential weakness when it comes to his distribution, but he should only get better in the long run, provided he does not suffer any more untimely injuries.
It remains to be seen whether United make a huge outlay for his services. The club may not get immediate results. Osimhen may need some time to adapt once more.
This could see the hierarchy lean towards a tried-and-tested option in the Premier League. Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane could re-emerge as a summer target.
After an indifferent start to the season, Kane has picked up his form immensely. He has netted 22 goals and registered six assists from 41 appearances.
Kane will be 29 by the start of next season, but United could still be tempted to move for him. The Spurs star appears back to his best after last summer’s speculation.
He could be prised away for a fee of around £100m with his contract expiring in June 2024. Spurs are likely to consider his sale this summer if he has no plans to renew.
