Man Utd have 95% chance of signing Frenkie de Jong – Gerard Romero

Manchester United have a 95 per cent chance of signing Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong this summer, reputed Spanish journalist Gerard Romero claims.

The Red Devils have been heavily linked with De Jong over the past few weeks with suggestions that Barcelona need to make a big-money sale before June 30 to balance their books.

It is now reported that the Netherlands international is edging closer to joining the Red Devils. Romero cites that there is a 95 per cent probability that he will end up at Old Trafford.

De Jong could be sold for a fee between €70-80 million. The transfer decision to said to be purely ‘economic’ with the midfielder having not been at his best under manager Xavi.

Our view:

The Netherlands international has been a key player for the Catalan giants in recent seasons, but it appears he is no longer indispensable amid their ongoing financial concerns.

The Blaugrana’s loss could be United’s gain. Incoming United boss Erik ten Hag likes to work with more technical midfielders and De Jong would be a fantastic signing, having already played under him.

The midfielder has generally operated from the centre of the park at Camp Nou, but he was a genuine defensive midfielder during Ajax’s stunning run to the Champions League final in 2019.

It has already been reported that De Jong would only consider leaving the La Liga giants to work again with Ten Hag. Hence, there are no surprises if United are close to sealing an agreement.

The 25-year-old is excellent with the ball at his feet with over 91 per cent passes completed this term. He has also impressed with his dribbling and knack for producing key forward passes.

These are attributes that made him a regular starter under Ten Hag at Ajax. He should perfectly fit into the Dutchman’s plans once more. While De Jong is more reliant on his concentration, he has also registered at least one tackle over average this campaign.
