Man Utd handed triple injury boost for Atletico Madrid clash

Manchester United have been handed a triple injury boost ahead of the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie against Atletico Madrid at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils recently returned to winning ways with a 3-2 Premier League triumph over Tottenham Hotspur at home. Cristiano Ronaldo was the difference between the clubs with the 49th club hat-trick of his career.

Ahead of Atletico’s visit on Tuesday night, there has been a timely boost with Luke Shaw, Bruno Fernandes and Scott McTominay all reporting for first-team training.

Among the trio, Shaw is expected to be assessed ahead of the European encounter. If fit, he could feature off the bench, considering Alex Telles is on press conference duties today.

Speaking to M.E.N, Rangnick said: “We have all the players available for the game tomorrow. There is a small question mark behind Luke Shaw, he has been training yesterday and today.”

“We have to wait and see until he if he is fully fit to see if he’s available for the game. All the other players are back in training and are available. No, he [Fernandes] tested negative yesterday and that was the reason he could train today.”

The last 16 tie is well balanced after a 1-1 draw in the first leg. Atletico were the better attacking outfit at the Wanda Metropolitano, but United salvaged a late draw through Anthony Elanga. The visitors don’t have an advantage.

Ahead of tomorrow’s game, United should have momentum on their side after the hard-fought win over Spurs. It remains to be seen whether they can replicate the showing against the La Liga champions.

Fernandes could slot straight into the starting XI, and there could be more changes. Rangnick described McTominay as one of the best ‘ball-winners‘ alongside Fred. The Scot could come in for Nemanja Matic.
