Manchester United have been handed a fresh boost in signing Monaco midfielder Youssouf Fofana during the summer transfer window.
The Red Devils have had a difficult campaign by their high standards and there could be multiple changes to the squad for next season.
A new defensive midfielder could be prioritised by the hierarchy and it has been reported that the club could make an approach for Fofana.
United have now received a boost in the pursuit with Monaco CEO Thiago Scuro admitting that Fofana could leave the club this summer.
He was quoted as saying by GFFN: “There were good opportunities for him to leave last summer. It was his decision to stay because of his personal goals.”
“It was a very good decision for us because he had a very good and consistent season, for him too as it was probably his best season at AS Monaco.
“He is probably one of the players that we are open to selling. We will see the opportunities that he has. It is still too early to make a decision.”
Fofana would be a good cost-effective signing
Casemiro has had a tough second season at United. The Brazilian has been caught out of position at times. He has also lacked the recovery pace.
In our view, Fofana would be a solid addition to the squad. The Frenchman averaged an impressive 7.2 recoveries and 1.9 tackles in Ligue 1 last term.
The 25-year-old completed 50 per cent of his duels with 1.2 take-ons per game. The former Strasbourg man also chipped in with eight goal contributions.
Fofana has similar attributes to Casemiro when it comes to the playing style, but he has the extra mobility and work rate as he is in the prime of his career.
Monaco currently value him at €30 million (£26m) with his contract expiring in June 2025.
He would be a good cost-effective signing for United to reinforce the defensive midfield department.
