Man Utd given boost to sign 29-year-old centre-back

Manchester United are in search of a new centre-back during the summer transfer window.

Last season Jose Mourinho used Chris Smalling, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Victor Lindelof and Marcos Rojo at centre-back but has never seemingly been settled on a centre-back pairing.

Lindelof struggled badly at the start of his United career last season following his big summer move from Benfica, but did end it strongly at least.  However, it looks as though the boss wants to upgrade again this summer.

We have been strongly linked with Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld in recent weeks but another centre-back may become available to us.

That’s because Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has said that Jerome Boateng will be allowed to leave the Allianz Arena this summer for the right price.

The 29-year-old admitted back in April that he was considering his future with the German champions after seven years, six Bundesliga titles and the 2013 Champions League with the Bavarians.

Boateng still has two years left on his current deal in Munich, but Rummenigge has refused to rule out a possible transfer this summer.  The former-German international is quoted by Bild (via the Manchester Evening News) as saying:

“If a club comes to us and he says that he wants to join that club, then we will negotiate. But the offer has to be important.”

Jerome Boateng had a brief spell at Manchester City in 2010-11 but was used sparingly and at right-back, before heading back to Germany where he has been a big success at Bayern Munich.  He has 71 caps for the German national team and was part of the defence that won the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
