Man Utd favourites to land star centre-back this month

Manchester United are outright favourites to sign Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulbaly, according to the odds at Paddy Power.

The Irish bookmaker has seen a ‘surge in betting’ on the 27-year-old joining the record champions that they have slashed their odds from 33/1 to 6/1 on Koulibaly joining us.

This makes us the outright favourites ahead of the likes of Chelsea and Barcelona who have also been linked with a move for the defender.

With caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solksjaer in charge at Old Trafford until the end of the season it’s unclear whether we will make a single signing or not this month.

What’s more, Victor Lindelof has looked more dependable at the back this season, whilst Eric Bailly is back in contention with the Norwegian having seemingly fallen out with Jose Mourinho.

A spokesperson at Paddy Power has been quoted by the Daily Express as saying:

“Forget winning the treble, Ole Gunnar Solksjaer managing to sign a top-class central defender would be enough to make him a Man United legend.

“We’ve been inundated with bets on Koulibaly joining the club as soon as this month, and he’s now five times more likely as he was before the game last night.

“And it could be a case of out with the old and in with the Kou, with the sale of Eric Bailly potentially part-financing the deal.”

We kept only our third clean sheet of the season on Wednesday night in our 2-0 victory at Newcastle United, with Phil Jones replacing the suspended Eric Bailly to partner Victor Lindelof in the middle of our defence.

Kalidou Koulibaly is one of the best centre-backs in the world and would be an upgrade to any side’s defence. It would be some coup by Ole and the Manchester United board were we able to pull this acquisition off.

The report in the Daily Express values Koulibaly at £90 million, which would make him the most expensive defender in the world should anyone snap him up at this price. The report also claims that we could reach a deal with Napoli as early as this month.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has won all four of his Premier League matches in charge as caretaker manager of Manchester United, moving us to within six points of the top four following last night’s victory.
