Man Utd ‘far more attractive destination’ than Newcastle United for Nicolo Barella

Manchester United are a ‘far more attractive destination’ for Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella amid interest from Newcastle United, according to Gazzetta dello Sport (page 10).

The Italy international has been a key player in the centre of the park for the Nerazzurri, but he could head for the exit door this summer as they need to balance their books.

The Magpies made an approach to sign him earlier this month, but it is reported that United would be the player’s preference despite the former qualifying for the Champions League.

Gazzetta dello Sport claim that ‘interested phone calls’ have been made from Old Trafford to Inter regarding Barella, who could be prised away for €80 million plus add-ons.

United looking to add more creativity from midfield

Barella had a superb 2022/23 campaign with the Nerazzurri. The 26-year-old scored nine goals and provided 10 assists from 52 appearances across all competitions.

Aside from his goal involvements, the Italian completed 85 per cent of his passes, winning 1.5 tackles and over four duels per game. He also caught the eye with his dribbling.

United are currently in advanced talks to sign Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount, and they are expected to make a fresh bid of around £50m for the England international.

Erik ten Hag reportedly has plans of pursuing two midfielders, but the big question is whether the hierarchy would be willing to spend £69m+ for Barella’s services.

It has been reported that United are working on a limited budget before player sales, and they can afford just one more big-money signing after Mount’s arrival from Chelsea.

With a striker and a goalkeeper on the manager’s wishlist, we don’t anticipate the club to enter the race for Barella.

An approach could be made later this summer depending on the funds gained from offloading unwanted players.
