Man Utd eye statement signing of Mateus Fernandes after UCL comeback

Manchester United will now shift their focus to the summer transfer window after securing the return to the UEFA Champions League.

Bolstering midfield is a clear agenda for Man United.

According to The Telegraph, Man United are interested in signing West Ham United star Mateus Fernandes.

The Hammers want Fernandes to stay but he is expected to leave if they are relegated from the Premier League.

The Red Devils have been watching Fernandes closely this season.

West Ham invested heavily to secure his services, splashing £38 million to sign him from Southampton last summer.

Fernandes would be a shrewd signing

The central midfielder recently earned his first international cap for the Portugal senior team, with manager Roberto Martinez describing him as “incredible”.

The 21-year-old has started 32 times for the Hammers, bagging three goals and three assists.

Despite worrying form of his team, Fernandes has shone brightly.

United are expected to reinforce their midfield with at least two new signings this summer.

Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton, Joao Gomes, Alex Scott and Aurelien Tchouameni are also on their transfer shortlist.

Fernandes could provide competition to Kobbie Mainoo for the number eight position and could also operate as a holding midfielder when United are dominating possession.

With multiple clubs monitoring his progress, United may need to act swiftly to secure his signature.

With Champions League football returning, the Red Devils must build a deeper and more competitive squad to cope with the demands ahead.

They cannot enter the 2026-27 campaign with only three midfielders.
