It seems that Manchester United are in the market for a new right winger this summer as we continued to be linked to a number of players in this position.
Last season Jose Mourinho didn’t appear to be settled on a single player out wide, with Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata and Marcus Rashford all getting time down the flank, among others.
Rashford himself is a striker who plays better on the left than the right when he is put out wide, whilst both Mata and Lingard have operated best for us in the number 10 role.
Therefore getting a player who is experienced in the right wing position seems sensible and now, according to the Sun, we have entered the race to sign Xherdan Shaqiri from Stoke City.
Following the Potters’ relegation to the Championship this past season the Swiss international is almost certain to depart the Bet365 Stadium this summer, particularly given he did a good job in the World Cup, helping his side to the second round.
The Sun reports that Xherdan Shaqiri could be available for as little as £12 million, which would be an absolute steal in today’s market. However, we would face competition from Premier League rivals Liverpool, even though they already have Mohamed Salah as their star man in the same role.
Shaqiri is quoted in the report as saying he wants to remain in the Premier League. The 26-year-old said:
“I want to stay in the Premier League, and you will find out my new club soon.”
Xherdan Shaqiri scored eight goals and recorded seven assists in his 36 Premier League appearances as one of the better performers for relegated Stoke last season.
He is a good dribbler of the ball with excellent rechnique and a good long range shot and set piece on him. However, the Swiss international’s workrate off the ball does leave something to be desired.
