Man Utd enquire about wantaway Monaco star Youssouf Fofana

Manchester United have had a lively transfer window with four signings and they could make more additions to the squad before the deadline.

The club have so far signed Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui this summer.

A new defensive midfielder seems the next priority. L’Equipe claim that the club have made an enquiry about Youssouf Fofana, who is expected to leave Monaco.

The Frenchman agreed personal terms with AC Milan at the start of the transfer window, but the Rossoneri have failed to meet the asking price.

Monaco raised their valuation last month and the Ligue 1 giants are now looking for at least £26 million to part ways with the Strasbourg graduate.

West Ham United have also made an approach to sign the 25-year-old.

Fofana could be United’s alternative to Ugarte

The Red Devils have identified Manuel Ugarte as their priority midfield target and super-agent Jorge Mendes has flown to England to speak with the club.

United have no plans of meeting the £60m asking price for the Uruguayan star. Their stance could change if Paris Saint-Germain provide a discount in the near future.

Otherwise, they could opt for a cheaper alternative. Fofana seems one of the top names on their radar.

The midfielder has caught the eye with his tireless work rate, duel winning ability and ability to make ball recoveries. He managed 7.2 recoveries per game last season.

Fofana does not possess the strong distribution skills of Ugarte, but he would be a solid competitor to Casemiro, who has lacked consistency of late.

Casemiro stood out for United in the Community Shield with a solid display, but he has shown signs of regression with limited pace and mobility over the past year.
