Man Utd declined chance to sign Boubacar Kamara

Manchester United turned down the opportunity to sign Boubacar Kamara from Marseille during the recently-concluded transfer window, reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano claims.

The Red Devils were widely tipped to sign a new defensive midfielder last month but ended the transfer window without making any purchases.

It is now revealed that they were offered the chance to land Kamara on a cut-price deal but were not interested in securing his signature.

The club’s hierarchy prefer to wait for the appointment of a new head coach before investing more money into the first-team squad.

Romano said on his Here We Go Podcast: “Manchester United were offered the opportunity to sign Boubacar Kamara in the last days of the window.

“They turned down this chance because they will invest more money for the new manager. They want to wait and see what’s best.”

Our view:

Kamara is regarded as one of the best young defensive midfielders in Ligue 1, and he has impressed with his excellent all-round attributes.

While he is solid with his tackling and interception skills, the 22-year-old has also excelled with his distribution with a success rate of 90 percent.

The 22-year-old likes to have the ball at his feet, averaging 64 passes per game, significantly more than Scott McTominay (40) and Fred (51).

He can also play as a central defender with relative comfort. All these qualities would have made him an excellent acquisition for United.

However, the club decided to pass on the opportunity. It is not surprising, considering they were reluctant to back interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

While Rangnick preferred a solid holding midfielder, the board probably felt that the new signing may not suit the next manager.

The £22.5 million-rated star is now free to sign a pre-contract, having entered the final six months of his deal. United could return for his services.

There are no assurances that the midfielder could wait for their decision as other clubs could pounce to recruit him soon.
