Man Utd counting on Darwin Nunez to reinforce their attack

Manchester United are counting on Benfica striker Darwin Nunez to reinforce their attack next season, Portuguese outlet Record (today’s edition, page 9) claims.

The Red Devils are expected to sign at least one striker this summer. Nunez has been one of the players regularly linked and there is no end to the speculation at the moment.

According to Record, incoming manager Erik ten Hag has his sights on landing Nunez and United are also counting on him to ‘renew their attack’ ahead of next season.

The club have suffered a big blow by failing to qualify for the Champions League next term, but the hierarchy are not giving up yet on luring Nunez to Old Trafford.

Our view:

Nunez has been in superb form for Benfica this term, bagging 34 goals from 41 appearances in all competitions. This has included key goals in the Champions League.

The 22-year-old has enhanced his glowing reputation by scoring against Ajax, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Liverpool, and does not appear to shy away in the big games.

This will obviously grab the attention of some of Europe’s elite clubs this summer. United will be hoping that they can prise him away with their pulling power.

One thing is for sure, the striker will cost a potential club-record fee. The Portuguese giants are likely to hold out for more than €100 million to sell their prized asset.

There may not be any room for negotiations over the valuation, but the big question remains whether United can convince him without Champions League football.

Despite the lack of trophies, United have still been able to lure world-class players over the past few years, but they are now preparing for a period of transition.

Nunez appears ideal to lead the line under Ten Hag, but he could have plans of winning regular silverware that may not be an assurance at United initially.
