Man Utd could sell Alvaro Fernandez to Benfica for €7m, for less with sell-on clause

Manchester United are open to selling Alvaro Fernandez to Benfica for less than €7 million, according to Portuguese publication Record (today’s edition).

The 20-year-old featured for the Red Devils during the pre-season campaign last summer, but he was loaned out before the transfer deadline to Granada.

The left-back has endured a tough time in La Liga with less than 400 minutes thus far and there is a possibility that he could be recalled this winter.

Amidst this, Benfica are exploring a deal for the former Real Madrid graduate and they could propose to sign him in either January or during the summer.

Record claim that United are looking for around €7 million to part ways with Fernandez, but the price could be lowered if Benfica accept a future sell-on clause.

Man Utd likely to opt for sale with sell-on clause

Fernandez had a productive season on loan with Preston North End last term, but it was not enough to convince manager Erik ten Hag to keep him this season.

With Tyrell Malacia’s injury, Fernandez could have been handed the chance to prove his credentials, but the manager opted to sign Sergio Reguilon on loan to fill the void.

The Spaniard’s current deal expires in the summer of 2024, but there is an option for another 12 months.

We would prefer United to delay a decision over his future until next summer, but we won’t be surprised if they sell him to Benfica with a huge sell-on clause of around 30 per cent.

The Portuguese champions are known for turning emerging players into potential world-beaters. If Fernandez turns out good for them, a future sale would directly benefit United.
