Man Utd could move for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen

Manchester United have been fancied to make an approach for Napoli star Victor Osimhen amid the uncertainty over their striker situation, Gazzetta dello Sport claims (today’s edition, page 14).

The Red Devils currently have Cristiano Ronaldo as the only specialist centre-forward in the squad, but it is unclear whether he would remain with the club next term.

The Portuguese has asked to leave United following the failure to qualify for the Champions League, and it appears likely that he will be shown the exit door in the near future.

This should pave the way for a new striker, and Gazzetta dello Sport report that United could be one of the clubs in the running to sign Osimhen from Napoli this summer.

Bayern are the other side that have been credited with an interest. The Bavarian outfit could be tempted to move for him if Robert Lewandowski leaves for Barcelona.

Osimhen would be a quality acquisition for United

Aside from Ronaldo, United have Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford that have played up front in the past. However, the attacking duo prefer to operate on the left wing.

Meanwhile, their form has also been concerning over the past 12 months. United would not want to enter the new campaign, trusting the pair to find the back of the net.

Hence, they could be tempted to pursue a high-profile striker and Osimhen could be a quality addition. The Nigerian bagged 18 goals and six assists from 32 outings for Napoli last term.

He managed to achieve those statistics despite missing two months with a cheekbone fracture. If he can stay unscathed, he has every chance of netting 25 plus goals over a single season.

Osimhen is a traditional striker, who operates in and around the box, but has gifted pace and a good aerial presence. At 23, he has room for progress and Erik ten Hag can help him excel.

Sebastien Haller looked out of sorts at West Ham, but went on to become a star for Ajax under Ten Hag. He bagged 47 goals from just 66 games including 11 in the Champions League.

Osimhen does not possess the same aerial ability , but he is a striker of a similar physical build. If he were to move to Old Trafford, he could prosper under the guidance of the Dutch manager.

United will of course need to pay a premium fee to prise away the former Lille man. Napoli are quite clear that they won’t accept anything less than €100 million (£85m) for their prized asset.
