Man Utd could make £25m move for winger in the summer

Manchester United are being linked with a move for PSV Eindhoven winger Steven Bergwijn this month.

The 21-year-old is having a highly-prolific season with the Dutch Eredivisie leaders, scoring nine goals and assisting a further eight in his 17 league appearances so far this season.

Bergwijn made has debut for PSV back in 2014 and became a first team regular last season where he started 27 of their 34 Eredivisie matches. Last year he earned his first two caps for the Dutch national team, the first of those as a starter in the 3-0 thrashing of Germany in the UEFA Nations League A.

According to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sent scouts to attend PSV’s 2-2 draw against FC Emmen over the weekend, in which Bergwijn provided an assist.

The report states that we are “emphatic” with our interest in the talented youngsters, who is equally adept at playing on the right wing as he is on the left.

However, it doesn’t look as though we’ll have a chance of landing Steven Bergwijn this month as De Telegraaf report that PSV are reluctant to sell one of their key players during the winter transfer window. The Eindhoven club are currently in a close title race with rivals Ajax. The Amsterdam club are only two points behind the leaders after both teams threw away leads to draw over the weekend.

We could still make a move for Steven Bergwijn over the summer instead. It was reported last week that the Dutch international could be available for a bargain £25 million, which is a price we wouldn’t flinch at.

Whether we would make a move for the player ahead of getting a new permanent manager in place certainly remains to be seen though. We don’t currently have an out-and-out right winger on the books with Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard playing the majority of our games out there this season, whilst Ashley Young has even spent time in that role.
