Man Utd could be without 8 defenders against Arsenal

Manchester United could be without as many as eight defenders when we play host to Arsenal at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

We already had injuries heading into Saturday’s trip to Southampton with Nemanja Matic forced to partner Phil Jones in the centre of defence in our 2-2 draw at St Mary’s.

Phil Jones could miss the game against Arsenal this week as he undergoes a scan after picking up a knock over the weekend. The England international is believed to be a ‘major doubt’ to face the in-form Gunners, according to the Express.

Furthermore, Luke Shaw was forced off with an injury in the final 20 minutes and was replaced by Diogo Dalot, with the 19-year-old making his Manchester United debut having only recently recovering from an injury himself after joining from FC Porto over the summer.

One defender who started against Southampton on Saturday who will definitely be ruled out of Wednesday’s game is Ashley Young. The 33-year-old has been playing at right-back in recent weeks but switched to the left at Southampton following Shaw’s injury. Young picked up a yellow card in that game and misses the Arsenal game due to suspension.

Victor Lindelof is not expected to be back until after Christmas after picking up a muscle injury against Crystal Palace last month. The Swedish international had formed a partnership with Chris Smalling in the middle of our defence in recent weeks.

Smalling himself is also believed to be a doubt having not been part of the matchday squad last time out. It’s not clear what the status is of Eric Bailly but he’s not been part of a matchday squad for a while so one would have to assume he’s unlikely to be available to face Arsenal too.

The final two defenders who are expected to be absent midweek are Antonio Valencia and Matteo Darmian as the both missed the trip to the South coast this past weekend. Valencia has only played one game over the past two months having struggled with an injury himself of late.

Marcos Rojo returned to the substitutes bench three days ago so could be forced into starting against Unai Emery’s side. He could be part of the back four alongside Diogo Dalot, who now has some game time under his belt. Fingers crossed we’ll have more players available in time for Wednesday too.
