Man Utd considering move for ‘fearless’ Newcastle star, could be signed for £50m

Manchester United are considering a move for Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall this summer, according to The Athletic.

The Red Devils are expected to make multiple changes to their squad ahead of their return to Champions League football next term.

The midfield department is the utmost priority at the moment, with Casemiro set to leave on a free transfer. Manuel Ugarte could be sold too.

However, United may also focus on other key departments. They are reportedly eyeing a ‘dynamic’ left-back to compete with Luke Shaw next term.

Patrick Dorgu was initially signed as a left-back, but the Dane is currently viewed as a potential deputy to Matheus Cunha for the left-wing position.

Hence, there is room for a new defensive signing, and The Athletic cite that United are weighing up a potential approach for Hall this summer.

The 21-year-old has not been a guaranteed starter for the Magpies at left-back despite his good progress. He could be sold for around £50 million.

United’s move for Hall could depend on the budget

The Red Devils’ primary focus this summer remains on strengthening their midfield.

They are on the cusp of landing Ederson from Atalanta for around £35m. The Brazilian has agreed on personal terms, and it is only a matter of time before he makes the switch.

Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali has also been linked with the club, but The Athletic have repeatedly stated that the Red Devils have no plans of meeting the £100m valuation.

In recent days, West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes has emerged as a genuine target, but the Hammers want £80m for him. Michael Carrick’s side may seek to negotiate on the fee.

As things stand, United seem unlikely to make a huge outlay of £50m to sign Hall, but the scenario could be different if they were to save additional funds from their midfield budget.

In that case, the club could make a serious move for Hall, who would be a fine addition at left-back.

The 21-year-old, described as ‘fearless‘ by BBC Sport, is one of the best young left-backs in the country. He won an average of five duels and two tackles per league game last term.

Hall also made five recoveries and almost three clearances per outing. He has impressed with his defensive traits, but also has the knack of making overlapping runs when required.

Shaw was ever-present during the course of the last league campaign. However, he has a long injury history, and his workload needs to be managed given the hectic schedule next season.

Hall would be an ideal left-back to rotate with Shaw. Shaw’s current deal expires next year, and Hall could go on to become United’s first choice for the role, given his immense potential at 21.
