Man Utd best placed to sign Pau Torres

Manchester United are best placed to sign Villarreal defender Pau Torres, Spanish publication AS claims.

The Red Devils are likely to recruit a new centre-back this summer, and it appears Torres is the prime transfer target.

It was recently claimed that manager Erik ten Hag wants Torres at ‘all costs‘ and AS report that a transfer is realistic.

The Spaniard is eyeing a move to one of England’s most prestigious clubs, and that is where United come into the picture.

The Red Devils are said to be ‘best placed’ to sign him, though Liverpool or Manchester City could scupper their chances.

Our view:

Torres was linked with United last summer when there was speculation that the club were eyeing a left-footed centre-back.

A deal did not materialise after the purchase of Raphael Varane from Real Madrid, but United seem to have revived their interest.

Looking at his statistics, it’s debatable whether he would suit the Premier League. He averaged just one tackle and 0.6 interceptions per league game last term.

His passing is also not exceptional with a success rate of only 86 per cent. However, his ball progression could be an attribute that has impressed the manager.

In the recently-concluded LaLiga campaign, he covered a progressive distance of 7305 yards with the ball. Only Real Madrid’s Vinicius fared better.

With Ten Hag’s attacking brand of football, Torres could be a good fit, but there will still be questions over his defensive ability until he proves himself.

The Spaniard is not someone who gets into tackles and relies more on concentration in and around his own box. He averaged over three clearances last term.

With an outlay of €50 million (£42.5m) needed, he won’t come on the cheap. In our opinion, RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol would be a better buy than the 25-year-old this summer.
