Manchester United are back in the race to sign Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries, according to Italian outlet Calciomercato.it.
The Red Devils were heavily linked with the Dutchman at the end of last year amid suggestions that Aaron Wan-Bissaka could be offloaded.
Wan-Bissaka had played just four minutes under manager Erik ten Hag before the World Cup and he seemed completely out-of-favour.
However, the right-back managed to transform his fortunes with Diogo Dalot’s injury. He was the regular right-back in the second half of the season.
Almost 12 months later, United are once again being linked with Dumfries. It is claimed his ‘athleticism and physicality’ suits the Premier League.
Calciomercato.it mention that we should pay attention to the Red Devils, considering Ten Hag knows Dumfries ‘very well’ from his time at Ajax.
Inter currently value him at €40 million but it is claimed that the valuation could increase if the Dutchman puts pen-to-paper on a new contract.
United unlikely to spend on another right-back
United were fancied to sign Dumfries earlier this year. The Dutchman’s attacking attributes were considered as a perfect fit for the manager.
The 26-year-old was a right-back during his time at PSV Eindhoven but he has played exclusively from the right wing-back role for the Nerazzurri.
He has been hugely successful in the position with nine goals and 18 assists from 108 outings, but has also been efficient with his defensive work.
In our view, United are unlikely to look into bolstering the right-back department. Dalot only recently put pen-to-paper on a long-term contract with the club.
Wan-Bissaka has been praised by Ten Hag on many occasions this year and the 25-year-old could be rewarded with a new deal in the coming weeks.
