Man Utd are convinced Antonio Silva and Goncalo Inacio would fit well in their set-up

Manchester United are convinced Portuguese stars Antonio Silva and Goncalo Inacio would fit well in their defensive set-up.

The Red Devils presently have Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez as the first-choice central defenders with Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans providing back-up.

Varane and Martinez have both been injury-prone over the past 14 months and United could invest on at least one top-class centre-back at the end of the campaign.

Both Silva and Inacio are currently on United’s transfer shortlist and Record claim that the Red Devils are convinced that the duo would ‘fit well’ under manager Erik ten Hag.

United could spend big on their defence next year

United could have a mini-overhaul of their central defence in 2024. Varane has been injury prone throughout his career and the club need a more reliable figure in the XI.

Martinez had a superb start to his United career last season before an unfortunate metatarsal fracture. He recently suffered a recurrence of the same problem against Arsenal.

With this in mind, the club may need to spend big in the central defensive department. The hierarchy should make an ambitious approach for Silva and Inacio next summer.

Silva and Inacio are both strong ball-playing centre-backs. They would provide strong competition to Varane and Martinez as they are right and left-footed respectively.

Whether United can sign both remains to be seen. Silva has a release clause worth €120 million in his Benfica contract while Inacio’s buy-out clause stands at around €60m.

Any centre-back signing is likely to coincide with a departure. We could see Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans leaving if United succeed in landing the duo.
