Manchester United and Chelsea could battle it out for the signing of Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana at the end of the campaign, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.
The Cameroon international joined the Nerazzurri on a free transfer from Ajax last summer and he has proved a brilliant acquisition with several stand-out displays.
This has not ended speculation over his future and Gazzetta dello Sport claim that the 26-year-old star is not indispensable ahead of the next transfer window.
United and Chelsea have knocked on the door of the player and it is added that Inter could be persuaded to sell their shot-stopper for €60-70 million this summer.
Onana would be Erik ten Hag’s perfect goalkeeper
Onana worked under Ten Hag at Ajax for four years. The Cameroonian was a regular due to his impressive ball-playing abilities and a reunion could be on the cards.
This season, Onana has kept 14 clean sheets from 28 outings. He was recently brilliant against Porto in the Champions League as Inter booked their quarter-final spot.
Aside from his superb reflexes, the former Barcelona graduate has also excelled with his distribution. He has completed an impressive 78 per cent of his passes this term.
If United were to sign him, he would be a superb long-term signing. The club are currently in talks to extend David de Gea’s stay but a huge pay-cut is set to be agreed.
In our view, Onana could be eased into the proceedings if he joins in the summer. We believe De Gea will be happy to stay at United irrespective of him losing his number one role.
The Spaniard recently entered the club’s record books for the most clean sheets. De Gea may now want to see out his career at United even if a new signing replaces him in goal.
