Man Utd 4-1 Burton: Player Ratings

A much changed Manchester United side were in cruise control for much of the game as we booked our place into the fourth round of this season’s EFL Cup with a 4-1 victory over Burton Albion.

Marcus Rashford opened the scoring after only five minutes before the 19-year-old doubled our lead shortly after.  Jesse Lingard made it 3-0 before half-time with help of a massive deflection yo wrong foot Connor Ripley.

Anthony Martial scored a goal he deserved after the break before Burton scored a consolation goal with the final kick of the game after a mistake from Joel Pereira to prevent our fourth 4-0 win of the season.

Here’s how our players fared:

Sergio Romero 7

Made an excellent save in the first half as well as putting Burton off during another good opportunity.  Sergio Romero was substituted in the final 15 minutes without conceding a goal.

Matteo Darmian 7

Lloyd Dyer got the big build up pre-game down the Burton left but Matteo Darmian was only stretched on the odd occasion as the Italian otherwise had a fine game.

Victor Lindelof 6

Was caught out a couple of times early on.  Victor Lindelof’s positioning in his early games as a Manchester United player are of cause to concern.

Chris Smalling 7

A comfortable game for Chris Smalling both in a back four and a back three in the second half.

Daley Blind 8

Burton didn’t have any luck down our left-hand side as Daley Blind put in a solid defensive display and was tidy on the ball.

Michael Carrick 8

A comfortable game for our 36-year-old captain on his first appearance of the season.  Michael Carrick helped us control the game from midfield and produced sublime passes for our opening and third goals.

Ander Herrera 8

A determined performance from the Spaniard who had no problems defensively though not hugely involved in any of our goals.  Flew into tackles and showed he really wants more game time this season.  Has put his name in the hat to partner Nemanja Matic at the weekend.

Jesse Lingard 8

Some excellent runs off the ball really hurt the Burton defence, and produced a superb touch to assist Rashford’s opener.  Jesse Lingard got his name on the scoresheet with our third goal via a huge deflection.

Juan Mata 9

The Championship side could not handle Juan Mata in the number 10 role.  The Spanish playmaker was everywhere playing some inch-perfect passes to torment and open up the Burton defence.

Anthony Martial 9

A man of the match performance from the French forward was completed with a fine finish to make it 4-0 in the second half.  Anthony Martial really hurt the Championship side with his pace, strength and dribbling.

Marcus Rashford 9

An excellent start from the teenager with two precise finishes gave us a 2-0 lead inside 17 minutes.  Marcus Rashford unselfishly created a one-on-one for Martial in the second half from which his teammate scored.

Luke Shaw 6 – A comfortable return as Luke Shaw came on at the start of the second half after being out for nearly five months.  Burton didn’t put the 22-year-old under any pressure but Shaw didn’t do himself any favours by looking too casual instead of sprinting up and down the field for 45 minutes.

Scott McTominay 6 – The youngster got a rare first team appearance and played steady whilst on the pitch.

Joel Pereira 4 – Surprise substitution in the final 13 minutes; Joel Pereira gifted Burton their stoppage time consolation.
