Manchester United began their Premier League campaign with a 2-0 defeat at Hull City last Saturday.
The defeat marked the first time United had lost to a newly promoted side on the opening matchday of a new league season.
As if the defeat was not enough, the Daily Mail report that United breached Premier League kit rules in the fixture.
The Red Devils wore their new third kit without a sleeve sponsor, contrary to Premier League rules.
The guidelines provide that every club without a sleeve sponsor must have the top-flight badge on both sides of their shirt.
Chelsea, Sunderland and Crystal Palace all featured the league’s lion crest on both sleeves in their respective matches, as they are also without a sleeve sponsor.
United are without a sponsor for the first time in eight years, following the expiration of their £20 million per-year deal with DXC Technology.
The Mancunian giants had reportedly planned to secure a new sponsor before their opening league game but could not complete an arrangement.
United will not be sanctioned but have been given a ‘polite reminder of the rule’. As a result, the top-flight badge will be on both sleeves when they face Ipswich Town at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
Away from the kit controversy, there is reason for optimism following the announcement of Carlos Baleba’s signing from Brighton & Hove Albion.
The Cameroon international is the club’s third midfield addition this summer following the arrivals of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos.
However, Baleba is currently injured and is not expected to return to action until mid-September.
