Manchester United have started this summer’s transfer window strongly.
United have already sealed the deal to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson. They are now pursuing a move for West Ham United star Mateus Fernandes.
Man United could also sign a centre-back, with doubts surrounding the fitness of Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt.
Journalist Gaston Edul now reports that United are interested in Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Cristian Romero and are preparing an offer for him.
The Red Devils face competition from Barcelona — who have made him a priority target — and Atletico Madrid for his signature.
Romero is open to leaving Tottenham this summer, but it remains to be seen whether he would prefer a move to United over other suitors.
Spurs are also preparing for his departure, having signed Bournemouth’s Marcos Senesi. They are also working on a deal for Brighton & Hove Albion’s Jan Paul van Hecke.
Romero initially joined Spurs on a loan deal from Atalanta in the summer of 2021, before the club made the move permanent the following year.
Previously described by former Spurs manager Thomas Frank as an ‘experienced player‘, Romero has grown in status at Tottenham, becoming their captain.
The 28-year-old is a widely known for his aggressiveness. He ranked second among Spurs players for tackles, interceptions and clearances per game in the Premier League last season.
He was also second for accurate passes and long balls per game, highlighting his ball-playing ability. He is also an attacking outlet, having scored four league goals.
However, Romero’s indiscipline makes him a risky signing for United. He has been sent off six times across all competitions since joining Spurs — the most of any Premier League player within that period.
The Mancunian giants are also targeting a left-footed centre-back, which could influence their interest in the right-footed Argentine.
Romero’s Tottenham teammate Micky van de Ven would be a better target for United.
