Man United player ratings vs West Ham United: Big VAR controversy and horror finishing stuns Erik ten Hag

Manchester United suffered a controversial 2-1 defeat to West Ham United in a dramatic Premier League clash on Sunday.

The Red Devils were running the show in the first half, creating several chances but frustratingly failing to hit the net.

Diogo Dalot, Alejandro Garnacho, Bruno Fernandes and Rasmus Hojlund all were dreadful in front of goal.

Julen Lopetegui reacted to West Ham’s horrific first 45 minutes by making three substitutions at the break.

Crysencio Summerville was one of them, and he put the Hammers ahead in the 74th minute. United levelled through Casemiro seven minutes later.

The game turned when VAR decided to intervene and penalise Matthijs de Ligt for a foul inside the box in the injury time.

It was a shambolic call from VAR and the referee David Coote to award a penalty for a foul that never existed.

Jarrod Bowen converted from the spot to secure the points. Let’s get into the player ratings.

Player Ratings

Andre Onana – 6/10

Onana commanded his box well. He was fingertips away from saving Bowen’s penalty.

Diogo Dalot – 4/10

Dalot endured a moment of embarrassment when he squandered a golden opportunity to score in an open goal. He failed to mark Summerville for West Ham’s first goal.

Matthijs de Ligt – 5/10

The Dutch international was the victim of a very harsh penalty against him. He had a mixed game, misplacing just one pass but failing to win any ground duels.

Lisandro Martinez – 6/10

A fine outing at the back and opted to carry on even after receiving a heavy knock in the first half.

Noussair Mazraoui – 6/10

It was Mazraoui’s first start as the left-back at United. He was fairly decent but could have contributed more in the attack after the break.

Casemiro – 7/10

The Brazil international was one of the better performers on his return to the starting XI.

He made seven clearances and two tackles and capped off his night with another headed goal for the Red Devils.

Christian Eriksen – 7/10

A fantastic first-time shot from the Dane put United ahead. His influence faded when he moved to the number ten position later in the game.

He played a sublime cross in the first half for Bruno Fernandes, but he failed to hit the target.

Bruno Fernandes – 7/10

The Portugal international deserved better. He should have had several assists in the first half, but his teammates let him down.

Alejandro Garnacho – 4/10

The winger should have scored twice in the opening minutes, but he struck the bar with his first chance and misfired on the second.

He was also guilty of losing the ball possession for Summerville’s strike.

Marcus Rashford – 5/10

He squandered a solid chance to impress England’s interim boss Lee Carsley. It was an anonymous display as he asked to do plenty of covering for Dalot at right-back.

Rasmus Hojlund – 5/10

Not many chances fell for him when United dominated the first half. He should have done better when Garnacho crossed the ball but he failed to test Lukasz Fabianski.

Substitutes

Amad Diallo – 5/10

Despite all the talk about his absence from the starting line-up, he ultimately flattered to deceive. He looks out of his depth at United.

Joshua Zirkzee – 6/10

Zirkzee provided an assist the equaiser.

Victor Lindelof – N/A

Too late to rate.
