Man United player ratings 5-4 Lyon: Maguire keeps United’s season alive in an explosive victory

Manchester United roared to a jaw-dropping 5-4 victory over Lyon in a Europa League quarter-final classic for the ages.

With the tie finely poised at 2-2 from the first leg, the stage was set for a showdown under the lights at Old Trafford.

Manuel Ugarte ignited Old Trafford with a brilliant early breakthrough, sending the crowd into raptures.

Lyon found their rhythm for a spell, but Bruno Fernandes nearly stunned everyone with a near-perfect strike.

Diogo Dalot capped the first half with a composed finish to double United’s lead.

The visitors hit back with a quickfire double in the second half with Corentin Tolisso and Nicolas Tagliafico striking within six minutes to draw Lyon level.

Tolisso got his marching orders after picking up his second yellow of the evening in the 89th minute.

The game was forced into the extra time where Rayan Cherki fired Lyon ahead with a low drilling finish.

Luke Shaw gave away a penalty, allowing former Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette, who coolly made it 4-2 for the French side.

The drama did not end there as Casemiro earned a crucial penalty. Fernandes buried it with nerves of steel.

Kobbie Mainoo picked out the far corner to bring United level in the 120th minute.

Harry Maguire, who was playing as an emergency striker in the last few minutes, rose like a warrior and powered home the winner, sealing a legendary comeback.

Player Ratings

Andre Onana – 7/10

Onana made amends with a pair of stunning saves, first denying Cherki’s shot from close range and then reacting brilliantly to keep out Tolisso.

He dived too early for Lacazette’s penalty but could not have done anything to stop other three goals.

Noussair Mazraoui – 7/10

Mazraoui threaded a sharp ball to Fernandes ahead of Ugarte’s strike. He was surprisingly taken off at the break.

Harry Maguire – 9/10

The England international made a vital block to rescue Yoro and earned an assist for Dalot’s strike.

However, his inexplicable decision to duck in the key moment allowed Lyon to equalise.

He delivered a moment of magic when United needed it most in the opposition’s box.

Leny Yoro – 5/10

Yoro struggled against Cherki twice in the first half, but impressed with his ability to drive the ball forward from deep.

He was again found out of his place for Cherki’s goal.

Diogo Dalot – 8/10

Dalot delivered a brilliant long ball to Fernandes before scoring at the cusp of half time.

Patrick Dorgu – 4/10

Dorgu endured another tough night at the back.

He was first turned inside out by Cherki down the left, then beaten in the air by Lacazette as Lyon struck their opener.

Casemiro – 10/10

Casemiro came close to scoring for United but goalkeeper Lucas Perri made a brilliant diving save.

The midfielder won a crucial penalty in the extra time before assisting Mainoo and Maguire late in the encounter. He proved tonight he is a clutch player.

Manuel Ugarte – 6/10

Ugarte took his goal with aplomb and looked solid out of the possession. His influence decreased in the second half.

Bruno Fernandes – 9/10

Fernandes burst to life with a clever run and a perfectly timed pass to Garnacho in the lead-up to the opener.

He nearly produced a Puskas contender with a sensational volley that rattled the crossbar. He emphatically scored from the penalty spot.

Alejandro Garnacho – 7/10

Garnacho dazzled with a sublime first touch to glide past Lyon’s defence before cutting it back for Ugarte’s opener.

He left Clinton Mata in his wake with a blistering run, but squandered the chance to put United 3-0 up.

His woeful miss will be remembered for a long time.

Rasmus Hojlund – 6/10

Hojlund showed major improvement in his link-up play and sent Garnacho through after a lovely interplay.

Substitutions

Luke Shaw – 2/10

Shaw was introduced at the break, but he struggled to positively influence the game and offered little going forward.

With all his experience, he was foolish to give away an extremely cheap penalty.

Mason Mount – 3/10

Not only his injury but his form looks concerning. He needs a fresh start.

Kobbie Mainoo – 8/10

Mainoo played in an unfamiliar striker role after replacing Hojlund.

He fired United level with great technique and celebrated with all the passion.

Harry Amass – 6/10

Amass put in a decent shift.

Christian Eriksen – 4/10

Eriksen failed to show any creativity. Amorim should rather have used a youngster to inject more urgency.
