Manchester United have opted against triggering the one-year extension clause in Paul Pogba’s contract despite the fact that his current deal expires at the end of next season.
The Frenchman has experienced a frustrating campaign due to a nagging ankle injury and he managed only seven league appearances before he opted for a surgery at the turn of the year.
Pogba is expected to return to first-team training when the season recommences after the coronavirus shutdown but there are still doubts over his long-term future at Old Trafford.
According to The Manchester Evening News, United are not looking to trigger the 12-month extension clause in Pogba’s contract despite the constant speculation in the media.
The same publication states that the hierarchy are fairly relaxed over the situation, given the player continues to remain a popular figure among his teammates at the club.
United have generally taking time to exercise the extension option and the earliest happened with Ander Herrera (in November 2017), whose clause was triggered seven months before the expiry of his deal.
As such, the board seem content to prolong the contract decision over Pogba for the next few months and hopefully, they can avoid the option altogether by convincing him to sign a fresh long-term contract.
Otherwise, the club may have to consider his departure next year and it will be interesting to see whether they can recoup the entire club-record £89m fee paid for his services from Juventus in 2016.
